» About J. Scott Kelley Photography
I am a full-service photography studio based out of Dallas, Texas. The majority of my clients are for weddings, portraits, and events (personal and commercial). People hire me not only for my talent and unique vision, but equally for my personable and jovial personality.
I shoot both in studio and on location depending on your needs. The studio is conveniently located on Greenville at Northwest Highway. I also have portable studio equipment that I use when I go on location.
Hi! My name is Jonathan Scott Kelley – but that’s a mouthful and not very memorable – so my studio is J. Scott Kelley Photography. Much better ring, yes? Possibly even sounds a little pretentious! Perfect! Plus, I get to sign my name as simply “J” which is 87.5% faster than Jonathan! People still call me Jonathan though. Or Scott. But not usually Jay. I don’t care, as long as they call me. ;)
And that’s who I am – Laid back, fun loving, a bit of a dork, and passionate about life! 2003 was an awesome year because people actually started paying me to do what I love. Since then, I’ve primarily focused on the wedding, portrait, and event arenas. Working with people is fantastic and very rewarding.
I took a class in college (as many people do), although this one was an introduction to photography. You can surmise the rest. My real training was with the fantastic national photographer and great friend of mine, Winn Fuqua. Thanks for all your support, Winn!
Of all things, I majored in Telecommunications Engineering at Texas A&M University. Yes, I’m a big geek at heart, and I’ll admit to having watched Star Trek: The Next Generation. The entire series. In order. In just a few months.
When not geeking out, I love to camp, backpack, rock climb, sail, practice martial arts, play flight simulators, and listen to music far too loud (or so my neighbors say).
This is starting to sound like a personals ad so I’ll stop here, but I hope that gives you a good idea as to who I am! Thanks for taking the time to visit my site!
I have a broad gamut of capabilities that I provide, whatever your project needs. I shoot both digital and film, studio and on-location, people and things, personal and commercial, day and night, and many other dichotomies!
Please contact me with your needs and I'll be happy to discuss how I can help.
A lot of people have asked about the equipment I use and whether I prefer Nikon or Canon. I’m happy to say that I’m not a zealot and I believe that both systems have excellent strengths. If you’re looking to buy an SLR, you’re not going to go wrong by going with one over the other, although I do advise you stick to one of those two.
That said, I shoot Nikon. I like their flash system better and I find their controls faster and more intuitive. My primary body is Nikon’s D200 and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. The following is a list of the equipment I regularly use:
- Nikon D200
- Nikon D70s
- Nikon SB-800 Flashes
- Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8 ED AF DX Fisheye
- Nikkor 60mm f/2.8D AF Micro
- Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 ED VR AF-S
- Nikkor 85mm f/1.8
- Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 LD XR DiII
- Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC EX HSM
- DynaLite Packs and Heads w/ Chimera, Photoflex, and Photogenic modifiers
